From October 15th to 17th, 2025, the International Fur Federation (IFF) Annual Conference was held in Bucharest, the capital of Romania. More than 60 industry representatives from 23 countries gathered to discuss the development of the global fur industry. Representatives from the China Leather Industry Association were invited to attend the conference.
The conference reviewed and approved the minutes of the previous meeting and the annual financial audit report, systematically reviewing the IFF's core achievements over the past year. It was reported that the association made progress in promoting Furmark and cooperating with well-known companies, and animal welfare certification has gradually extended to areas such as blue sheep and Merino sheep shearling. The conference focused on the response to fur bans in Europe and the United States. The current situation is mixed: the association has successfully prevented fur bans from being implemented in Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and several states and cities in the United States, including Rhode Island and Denver. However, the European Commission's subsequent discussions on the fur industry and the EU's invasive alien species legislation have brought uncertainty to the development of the industry in the region. It is noteworthy that Poland, a major fur-producing country in Europe and the United States, has confirmed the implementation of a farming ban, with an eight-year transition period. In addition, the meeting reported on the annual work of the association's Asia, Eurasia, Europe, and America regions. Representatives from Russia, Turkey, and other countries shared the progress of important industry activities in their respective countries. Representatives from SAGA, the St. Petersburg Auction House in Russia, and the North American Wild Skin Auction House, among others, interpreted the annual raw material price trends and predicted future market conditions.
In the future work planning section, the International Fur Federation clearly stated that increasing the promotion of fur in China's fashion industry and supporting China's fur trade exhibitions are key priorities. The Chinese representative introduced the achievements of the "Moda China" International Footwear, Bags, and Apparel Fashion Exhibition, to be held from September 3rd to 5th, 2025: This exhibition aims to enhance the image of the global fur industry chain and the level of its supply chain and value chain, effectively attracting mid-to-high-end fashion buyers to integrate into the fur industry supply chain. Held concurrently with the China International Leather Exhibition and sharing entry credentials, it jointly creates the world's second-largest leather industry chain trading platform, providing global buyers with one-stop ordering services. It is reported that the next Moda China exhibition in 2026 will be held from September 1st to 3rd, attracting attention from representatives from various countries.
A concurrent industry forum will be held during the conference, moderated by the CEO of the International Fur Federation. Experts from Canada, China, Finland, Romania, and other countries will engage in in-depth discussions on industry development. In their forum presentation, the Chinese representative comprehensively introduced the development of China's fur industry, covering core aspects such as fur animal breeding, garment processing, and wholesale and retail. They also offered suggestions for industry development: the global fur industry needs to strengthen interconnectivity, increase industry promotion to enhance its image and value, and deepen research on supply and demand relationships. Through objective and rational judgment and measures, they aim to help the entire industry overcome its current development downturn.
In addition, the participating representatives collectively visited the Romanian MG company and the Margarit fur processing factory. The Chinese representative engaged in extensive exchanges with counterparts from other countries, exchanging views on topics such as industry technology and trade cooperation.
